Lose the platitudes, but do the work

As I write this, its World Mental Health day.

I’m not a huge fan of platitude days.

But they have and serve a need and a purpose.

Especially around the topic of work and the impact of toxic workplaces on our individual and collective wellbeing.

Positive physical, mental and emotional health is vital to us humans and also to our workplaces.

I have the privilege of speaking at an event today, on this topic. Inclusion in the workplace.

The importance of creating community at work, creating a listening culture, of being truly open to all.

Belonging is a basic human need. And we need to humanise our workplaces.

The opposite of belonging is feeling the need to fit in.

And as leaders we have the responsibility to set the tone and show a new way to be.

Diversity is a fact, but inclusion is a demonstrated act.

And actions speak louder than words.

When we use our voice, share our story, speak our truth and show our vulnerability, it encourages others to do the same.

And helps create a sense of safety and removes the shame of vulnerability.

It helps us lead with love.

Love + Leadership. We need more of both. In our workplaces, our communities, in our world.

Let's not shame ourselves into thinking we need to shrink to fit. We don't.

Shame shields solutions. So be unapologetic in using your voice in the pursuit of what we know we can change together.
