Re-entry

How’s September going for you?

Rhetoric and chat around this time of the year as the kids go back and the rhythm returns.

New year, fresh start, new season vibes.

I don’t always buy-it as a true point of change.

We can make promises to ourselves about change that can be easily broken.

I’ve learnt that trying to use logic to make our way through personal change is often futile.

We are hard wired for safety and our brains often stop us from pivoting in the way we think we could or would like.

How safe do we feel to start to make those small steps towards where we want to go?

If you are going through a period of uncertainty about your work.

If you’ve lost sight of your way or your why around what you do.

If you’re just feeling a bit more than tired.

Consider this.

You can’t think your way through change, but you can feel it in your body.

We miss the inner compass and wisdom of how things show up in our physical space.

Tension, headaches, gut issues, fatigue. Just that sense of unease.

We often ignore these signs and tell ourselves to be more resilient.

I’ve yet to meet a successful senior leader or business owner who needs to prove their resilience even more.

Instead, maybe consider the question “who am I now?” rather than “what do I want to be or do?".

What do you want more of? What would you like less of?

The definition of burnout that I learnt this week is this:

Toxicity minus sense of self equals burnout.

💡💡💡Lightbulb moment.

Recovering from a toxic situation, workplace or circumstance is not always the same as healing.

And often, we are healing ourselves from corporate, workplace wounds.

I spoke to a wonderful podcast guest this week, an ex-lawyer.

She said to me “I was never a lawyer, I just worked as one. I lost sight of my values in corporate. I needed to connect back to who I was.”

I can relate. Can you?
